It seems Delhi Traffic Police (DTP) is making use of technology and social networking power to catch hold of traffic rule violators in the city. The DTP has created a
Facebook page and is answering general public queries and supposedly taking action on the traffic violations as reported by the Facebook users.
The move looks more motivated by the commonwealth games (To be hosted by Delhi in October 2010) than the frustration of catching city's unruly drivers. As a resident of Delhi, I have been part of this traffic for a long time and wished traffic rules had been implemented for all!!
The Facebook page has already attracted around 17000 fans and the main modus operandi looks like general public can click a picture (as a proof) of the traffic violation and upload it on the Facebook page. The DTP page moderator might respond to the question put up by the reporter. But there is no way you can find out if any action was actually taken on the defaulter.
Also, there is a big question on the authenticity of the pictures uploaded by users as the pictures can easily be modified by a normal computer literate and can be used to mis-guide the police. I hope DTP knows this loophole and does not unnecessarily fine innocent people!!
Nevertheless, the move is highly appreciated and i hope it continues after commonwealth games too.
