USCIS Status – Name was updated, Change of Address Updated

USCIS status - Name was updated can happen due to internal name correction to match your paper application. Address change update could be to fix apartment or street number.

USCIS Status Update – Name was updated?

Even though you or your employer never sent any explicit request to update your name, USCIS case status update shows as ‘Name was updated‘.

Don’t worry, this is just an internal USCIS system update. It is now showing on their USCIS case status website. It can happen with any visa application like i765 (EAD), i 129 (work permit like H1B), i130, i485, i526 etc.

When the USCIS officer detects any mis-match in your name or address in their system with respect to your actual application, they want to correct / fix the name in their system.

This mis-match could happen due to the typing mistake made by the data entry operator while feeding your application in USCIS systems.

Change of Address update

Change of address update also has the same explanation when you or your employer attorney have NOT requested any update but you still see it on USCIS case status.

A missing zip code or an apartment number or an address spelling update can be made by USCIS officer to fix errors internally.

Should I worry or inform Attorney or employer?

There is no need to worry about these USCIS updates and no need to inform attorney or employer either. Your application is safe and is being actively worked on.

Does Name Change status mean RFE is on the way?

No, absolutely not. Many people believe that ‘name was updated’ status means an RFE (request for evidence) is on its way.

This is NOT correct. Do not believe the rumors.

No need to worry or inform Attorney about name change status.

There is no information shared by USCIS at this time for opening H1B premium processing for applications filed after Dec 21, 2018.

Case Was Received status to “Name Was Updated” status. What does this even mean? What could be the next step by USCIS?

As explained in above article, ‘name was updated’ does not mean anything substantial. You can ignore it.

      Hi Anil,

I have my OPT until May-2019. On the End Client letter, Client didn’t mentioned the project duration this was the reason for my denial which USCIS stated on their denial notice. We’ve submitted everything contractual agreements SOW, PO and Work Order. This is the only specific they pointed for the denying my petition. Have you seen any such cases? what are my chances if appeal on this?

If the new letter can be submitted after fixing the denial reason, you have good chances of approval.

          Hi Anil,

Client provided me the letter with project duration and also I got the work order from vendor. So, my employer is getting ready to submit MTR+Appeal next week. How long does USCIS take to reopen my case with MTR and after reopening how long do they take for any action on my case? Is there any tracker or post I can follow for MTR and Appeal?

Currently, the MTR+Appeal processing time data is not publicly available (as far as I know) but it takes usually 6-8 months to reach a result.

Hi Anil – My USCIS case status is “Name was updated” since 5 jan 2018,almost a year for H1B application. Can you please put some light on this situtation?

              Hi Anil,

I have applied for H1b this year and my petition was picked up in the lottery. As you know, My previous petition for FY-19 was denied and appeal is still pending. My new petition is with the same employer. Can I know if the new application would be solely judged or would it have any impact from my previous rejection? In addition, Can I know if USCIS would process the new application as it received or wait for the decision from AAO on the appeal from the previous application as both are filed by the same employer?

If you have submitted the same documents and same job position as the earlier one with rejection, the chances of rejection again are very high.

Also, the new cap subject H1B needs to be filed only when you have stayed outside USA for at-least 365 physically.

As per my understanding, you will get an RFE. If you don’t, consider yourself extremely lucky.

It’s the same job position but, this year we got appropriate client letter from the Client stating all the job duties and project duration with Work orders and SOW’s – Since this was the main reason for denial last year. Mine is an EVC model. Not sure how the appeal is going to impact the new one petition.

H1B denial Appeals have very low chance of approval at 3%.

              Hi Anil,

Just wanted to let everybody know, My appeal has been dismissed on 7/13/2019. We submitted additional evidences to overcome denial reason. But, unfortunately appeals office found another reasons to deny my petition. Good luck to all of you who are waiting. Below are the timelines:-

11/19/2018 – H1B Denied – As end client didn’t confirmed the project duration.
12/17/2018 – Submitted Appeal + MTR with updated end client letter and updated WO’s
1(Jan)/4/2019 – Case transferred to appeals office
7/13/2019 – Case was dismissed by appeals office on the basis of definitive non-speculative SO and EE relationship.

Sorry to hear about the denial Sam.
Looks like USCIS just wants to deny applications with some reason.

    Hi Anil,

My RFE Response has been received by California Service Center on Sept-14. On that day itself, my case status changed to name was updated(We haven’t requested any updates) and from then, I don’t see any updates on my case. Is it something I need to worry? It’s been 2 months since RFE response received, When can I expect a decision from USCIS? I see your article about rfe response times and the average response time is 92 at present scenario. But, I just want to get your advice on my situation.

Don’t worry about the ‘name updated’ status. It has nothing to do with your RFE or processing of case.
Unfortunately, the RFE processing time is un-usually high at this time and the average is more than 90 days as you have seen on other article.
